He then went on to receive a master's degree in saxophone performance under Joseph Wytko at Arizona State University. After teaching in the public schools for a number of years, he continued his education, earning a Master of Sacred Music degree from Luther Seminary, where he studied choral conducting with Anton Armstrong, conductor of the St. Olaf Choir.
